GMW Connections Project - Channel 9

The $2-Billion-Dollar GMW Connections Project is a major infrastructure initiative funded by both Victorian and Commonwealth governments, aiming to prevent excess water wastage - enhancing water recovery in hopes of supporting fish, vegetation, and water quality across Victoria.

This project is comprised of two stages that are contracted to deliver 225 GL LTAAY and 204 GL LTAAY of water recovery respectively in hopes of meeting an expected water recovery threshold of 429 GL LTAAY. Both stages under the GMW Connections Project aims to contribute greatly towards Victoria’s water recovery target of 1,075.3 GL LTAAY under the larger Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

What is the GMW Connections Project?

The GMW Connections Project is one of Australia’s largest and most ambitious waterway modernisation projects, with a promise to create a sustainable future for productive agriculture in northern Victoria. The project is a key part of Victoria’s contribution to the Murray-Darling Basin Plant, with a majority of water recovery being provided to environmental water holders who protect and improve waterway health.

All channels and meters are upgraded and rationalised to prevent wasting water through leakage, seepage and evaporation - an estimated long-term annual average of 429GL will be achieved through this more efficient irrigation system.

The GMW Project has a range of benefits and aims to upgrade vital irrigation infrastructure in the State, with key benefits including:

  • Water savings for environmental use across the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District.
  • Development of modernised irrigation systems to maximise efficiency
  • Assist communities to adapt to reduced water availability
  • Aid in the development of sustainable and productive agricultural future
  • Provision of employment opportunities across local contractors and communities

How was Yellow Hire involved?

Leading the GMW Connections Project was contractor John Holland, who commissioned all machines for the $8.5 Million-Dollar Channel 9 upgrades, in efforts to get operations completed on-time. Yellow Hire is proud to have joined local workers during the 6-month construction period, supplying telehandlers, rollers and pumps for dry hire.

Throughout the project, Yellow Hire was also on standby, ready to provide mechanical and maintenance support to help guarantee the smooth and efficient execution of the project deadlines.

Yellow Hire’s dry hire telehandlers were utilised for the lifting and installation of pipeline throughout the project, relying on our expertise, stable operation and reliable machinery to lift the material safely. Our rollers and pumps worked to ensure the ground conditions were perfect for further work and for final finishing touches. Finally, our expert mechanical and maintenance support crew worked tirelessly to keep our machines in the best condition and to keep on top of all tasks the project required us to complete.
